There are only 10 days left until the event!
DTJ 2025 will take place in the Shirataki district of Engaru Town in Hokkaido. However, this is not a typical tourist destination. What is there to see? What can you eat? What is nearby? Many of you may be searching for answers to these questions, but you might not find much tourist information. Due to scheduling and physical limitations, it may be difficult to visit many places, but here is some useful information about Shirataki that you should definitely check out.
Eat at Michi-no-Eki Shirataki (Shirataki Roadside Station)
If you are coming from the Asahikawa area, the most common way to access the venue is via the expressway. Exit at Okushirataki IC, where you will find Shirataiki Roadside Station. While many roadside stations nowadays have large shopping malls attached, Shirataiki Roadside Station is a relatively classic one. It has a parking lot, restrooms, vending machines, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a farmers’ market, but it is not very large.
Restaurant
The restaurant offers noodle dishes such as udon, soba, and ramen, as well as curry. To be honest, it’s fairly plain.
The “Deer Meat Pork Curry” stands out among these dishes.
Is it deer curry or pork curry? When I ordered it, I found out that it was pork curry with deer sausage on top. Since there aren’t many opportunities to eat deer meat, why not try it as a souvenir of your visit to Shirataki? Even without the deer meat, this pork curry is delicious, and the portion is generous! It’s very satisfying.
Newcomer in 2025!
In addition, there is a newcomer for 2025 that just went on sale in this April.
Here it is!

These are bento boxes and koppepan sandwiches that are sold outside of the restaurant.
There seem to be several types of sandwiches, but the one in the photo is the Wagyu Croquette Koppepan Sandwich. Oh, Wagyu! What an enticing name! And two of them! It’s not a local specialty from Shirataki, but it’s a new product that recently started selling. I tried it for the first time the other day while working on the course.
The juicy appearance of the chicken is hard to resist. The koppepan sandwich also has a generous filling.
The chicken in the bento box is very flavorful. The sauce is delicious, but the chicken itself is tasty too. Mixed rice is usually more about the flavor of the ingredients and how it’s eaten with side dishes. However, this mixed rice has a rich flavor that really soaks in, making it exceptionally delicious. The portion size is generous, and the taste is satisfying.
The bread is made to resemble school lunch koppepan, so it’s inexpensive, but it’s packed with ingredients for maximum impact. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it’s almost all filling. I wish it were freshly fried, but it blends well with the bread and is still delicious. Everyone loves Japanese yakisoba-pan and Croquette-pan, right? This is like an ultra-enhanced version of that. It’s so good that I can’t imagine anyone being dissatisfied with it.
Apparently, there used to be a company in Shirataki that manufactured canned goods like bear and deer meat. Now, they produce mixed rice seasoning with local mountain vegetables, chicken, and seafood (Hakuyou-sya). Some of these products are available as souvenirs, so you might want to check them out. Additionally, the canned goods are sold online. The story was about using these ingredients for bento boxes and gourmet-style koppepan sandwiches made with the koppepan used for school lunches.
How about it? If you plan to arrive the day before and camp or sleep in your car, We highly recommend these for dinner or breakfast. If you were thinking of grabbing something at a convenience store and heading straight to the site, these are a great alternative. It’s not only delicious, but also unique to this area. It’s reasonably priced at 500–700 yen and offers great value for money.
However, it would be unfortunate to go to the roadside station expecting to buy one and find that they are sold out. Therefore, advance orders are available for DTJ2025 participants. National Treasure! in Shirataki
There is a national treasure in Shirataki.
A national treasure, you say?
The Shirataki area is a source of obsidian, and numerous Paleolithic stone tools have been discovered there.
The area has long promoted the management and research of past geological activities through the Shirataki Geopark and the “Shirataki Geopark Exchange Center,” which is located next to the Shirataki District Office. The center was also present at the first Daisetsuzan Trail Journey (Taisetsuzan Ultra Trail).
These artifacts were designated National Treasures in 2023.
This article’s title has two exclamation marks. I imagine the writer was very excited at the time!
The exhibition of excavated items designated as national treasures has been reorganized and expanded, and it is definitely worth seeing. The Engaru Town Buried Cultural Properties Center, now a romantic destination, is less than 15 kilometers from the venue and takes less than 20 minutes to reach by car. Admission is 320 yen.
